Lithium-ion batteries: a sailor buying guide

Andrew  explained why the quality should be selected when installing lithium-ion batteries, and the best lithium iron phosphate batteries on the market we selected
Lithium batteries are much lighter than lead-acid and theoretically have almost twice the capacity of lead-acid.
The key to a truly successful installation of lithium-ion batteries, for those who want to adopt newer battery technology or even devote themselves to electric boats, is to use the top-notch lithium-ion battery battery monitoring system (BMS) with the same first-class quality.
The best BMS will be tailored to the installation situation, while the worst BMS will be only a rough protection to avoid a complete breakdown.
If your goal is to have a safe, reliable and durable energy storage system on board, then don't try to save some money on the BMS.
But to make matters worse, in the case of lithium-ion devices, in the long run, using cheap, poorly manufactured components will not only waste a lot of money, but also cause a major fire risk on board.
The LiFePO4 battery is advertised as an ideal "plug-in" lead-acid battery replacement without the need for additional charging equipment.
It is said to be compatible with all lead-acid chargers and DC-to-DC converters currently on the market. They have a built-in BMS that can monitor and control their charging and discharging functions to ensure maximum safety, reliability and long life.
LiFePO4 is 35% lighter than equivalent lead-acid batteries and 40% smaller in size. It has high discharge capacity (<1kW/120A), 1C charge rate and the ability to provide up to 2,750 cycles under 90% DoD, or up to 5,000-50%. % DoD sadcycle.
The Dutch company Victron is known for its high-quality electrical products, providing 60-300Ah capacity "plug-in" LFP batteries, suitable for 12.8 or 25.6V installations, when discharged to 80% of DoD or up to 5,000 cycles, it can provide 2,500 Only 50% per cycle.
Smart tags mean they can use the integrated Bluetooth module for remote monitoring, but they do require an external Victron VE.Bus BMS.
The current discharge limit is 100A per 100Ah, and the maximum number of batteries in parallel is 5.
These plug-in replacement LFP batteries have a built-in BMS and a unique radiator to cool the battery while it is charging.
The IHT "plug-in" 100Ah LiFePo4 battery from the well-known LFP brand Battle Born in the United States can accept 1C charging and 100A discharge current (200A peak in only 3 seconds) without damage.
They also include a comprehensive built-in BMS that can manage voltage thresholds, temperature, battery balance, and provide short-circuit protection.
Firefly’s proprietary technology includes a carbon-based porous foam with thousands of open cells that distribute the sulfuric acid electrolyte over a wider area to improve the efficiency of lead-acid chemistry.
The "microbattery" in the carbon foam electrolyte structure can achieve a higher discharge current rate, increase energy density and extend cycle life (<3x).
It also allows faster charging compared to traditional lead-acid batteries, which is ideal when charging from a limited period charging source such as solar or alternator.
Fireflies are extremely resistant to sulfate and can be used with standard multi-stage lead-acid chargers and alternator regulators.
In these deep-cycle absorption glass fiber mat (AGM) batteries, the carbon cathode is said to increase charge acceptance, thereby speeding up the batch charging process, increasing the number of cycles available and reducing the destructive sulfation of the plates.
The lead crystal battery is a sealed lead acid (SLA) that uses an innovative, non-corrosive SiO2 acid electrolyte that will crystallize over time, making it stronger and improving performance.
The high-purity lead-calcium-selenium electrode plate and electrolyte are stored in the microporous pad, so the battery's charging speed is twice that of the conventional SLA, the discharge is deeper, the cycle is more frequent, and it is used at more extreme temperatures than lithium-ion batteries and provides better performance Many other AGMs have a longer service life.
